Eyambeko was founded in 2011 by the German Reinhard Maier, who before had been working in Namibia. As corporate volunteer in his employer Pfizer’s Global Health Fellow Program he supported the work of an international development organization. In Namibia he looked into the national TBC / HIV program of USAID and the Namibian Ministry of Health. He returned to Germany with new experiences and a personal connection to the country and its people.
It started with the sponsoring of individual children, whose education Reinhard Maier and a few like-minded supporters paid for between 2009 and 2011. In the meantime also a school was supported financially. When the number of sponsored children and youths had grown to 15 in May 2011, Eyambeko was founded as a registered, nonprofit society.
In November 2013 Eyambeko started its sponsorship program also in South Africa and in January 2016 in Uganda.
